Thursday evening I attended
Awol Erizku, a NYC based photographer and film-maker's gallery premiere of his latest project at the
Hasted Kraeutler Gallery in Chelsea NY. I've been following Awol's work for quite some time and the fact that I had the opportunity to meet him surely turned out to be a pleasure. To top off the gallery premiere some great tunes were provided by
MeLo-X himself. I must pinpoint what I appreciated the most about attending this event was the unconventional essence of it all, it wasn't your typical gallery openings with your typical photography and typical people eating orderves. Everything from Awol's work, the poeple, and the music was out of the box and simply beautiful.
“Pop-culture has a lot of influence on my work. I like to re-contextualize art historical pieces with a twist of pop.” - Awol Erizku
Honestly, for a moment I did not understand totally what Awol's concept was behind his new project but of course some research and interpretation helps. A few months back I watched footage of a profile done on Awol, while building this post I went back to that same footage.
(watch here) He states
"I'm always looking for something that doesn't belong, or things that have a deeper meaning than what they seem." Awol's entire project as a collective in my opinion is just that, I feel that every image that was featured wasn't visually complex but spoke volumes but also has this "unfitted" or "out of the box" image. That's what makes Awol's work so great and appears effortless. If I can choose one word to describe Awol's pieces he premiered it would be,
"powerful." - sabla`
